Former Democratic National Committee Chairman and Indiana super delegate Joe Andrew announces his support for Barack Obama for President today, withdrawing his former support for Hillary Clinton. Andrew calls upon his fellow Hoosiers as well as other super delegates to unite behind Barack Obama.
"Over and over again he has shown the metal to be a great candidate, and more importantly, a great president." Andrew said today.
Andrew, the former Democratic National Committee Chairman was elected to the post in 1999 with the support of then President Bill Clinton. Andrew said today "My support for Bill Clinton continues to be profound." Andrew said he believes that Bill Clinton "is one of our greatest presidents".
He said that the way Obama handled the Wright controversy and the way he handled the gas tax holiday shows he is willing to do what is right for the country, not what is right for him politically.
Andrew advised that after Tuesday, the Democratic party has to decide who their candidate will be. The continuing competition in the Democratic party has helped John McCain in the polls, and made it harder for either Democrat to win the presidential election: "...John McCain without doing much of anything, is now competitive against both of them. The lengthy primary process is no longer helping Democrats. It's helping Republicans."
