The Republican's have been on the run in recent months. They lost two special elections in the past several months for long held House Republican seats. The lost seats were in Louisiana and Illinois. The Illinois seat loss was especially grating since it was the seat long held by Dennis Hastert, the former Republican House leader.
In the election last week in Louisiana, Republican's lost for the second time in two months. The Republican's tried to paint the Democratic challenger as being in step with Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi. The startegy did not work and the Democratic challenger took the seat as he was able to paint the Republican as being in step with President Bush.
The Republicans will again try the same strategy today in Mississippi to hold on to the seat vacated by Roger Wicker who took over the Mississippi Senate seat vacated by Trent Lott when he retired.
With about 50 House Republican seats estimated to be in play in November, the Republicans can ill afford another devastating loss. The main problem for the Republicans is President Bush who is reviled by a large percentage of Americans and is an albatross on the neck of every Republican Candidate.
