Red Cross Estimates thta up to 127,000 Dead in Myanmar

The Red Cross estimates that up to 127,000 people died in Myanmar from the Cyclone that hit that Country. Myanmar is now bracing for another potential cyclone to hit the beleagured nation in coming days.
Some other relief agencies are complaining that they have only been able to reach about 10% of the victims. Most of the victims are not getting any of the aid that is being brought in by outside groups. A lot of blame is being put on the Miltary Junta who run Myanmar and really do not want foreign groups in the country in the first place.
The Military Junta says that they have the situation under control and do not need other entities helping them. This contrasts to the leaders in China who are welcoming foreign aid to cope with the devastating earthquake that hit Western China ealier this week.
To add insult to injury, the Military Junta is not even alerting residents that another cyclone may hit the area in the next 24 hours.

About 30,000 Chinese are believed buried in Western China. Some small towns such Yinxiu as have been completely destroyed. There are still people trapped in schools and hospitals that were near the epicenter of the quake. The eathquake had a magnitude of 7.9.
Beijing has sent 20,000 soldiers and police to the disaster area with 30,000 more on the way. They are also very happy to take in foreign aid to help withe disaster. This contrasts with the situation in Myanmar where the Military Junta there has been resistant to foreign aid.
The earthquake is the worst to occur in China since 1976 when almost 250,000 people died in a horrific earthquake which struck the city of Tangshan.

First U.S. Relief Aid Arrives in Myanmar
5/12/2008 2:30 PM
The first C-130 Hercules Transport Plane landed in Myanmar to deliver badly needed relief supplies. The country of Myanmar has been in dire need of the supplies since a massive Cyclone hit there last week.
Upwards of 100,000 people have already died due to the natural catastropy and many more are expected to die if supplies do not reach the victims. The Military Junta who run the country are not trusting of foreign enitities and fear the U.S. the most. That situation has prevented more aid from reaching the people affected by the crisis.
Two more C-130 Transport planes are scheduled to arrive in the beleagured country to augment the supplies already delivered. There are shortgages of water in the affected areas and to avoid widespread illness, villagers need to avoid drinking water there that has been contaminated by the rotting corpses of people who perished in the disaster.

Cubans Celebrate May Day in Havana
5/1/2008 2:00 PM
Hundreds of thousands of Cubans marched through Revolution Square today to mark Cuba's first May Day celebration since Fidel Castro stepped down as president. Communist Party official and labor leader Salvador Mesa said to the crowd "It is fundamental to concentrate efforts on increasing production and productivity, above all of food." He said that there had been modest gains in production and services, but that Cuba needed to reduce costs and achieve more economic efficiency.
Raul Castro, Fidel's brother, who was elected president by the Cuban National Assembly in February, has lifted restrictions such as the owning of cell phones and going to hotels meant for tourists. He has also attempted modest reforms to increase food production. While these reforms are mostly symbolic, many Cubans see them as a sign of better things to come.

Iranian official warns of Barbie Doll and other Western cultural Dangers
4/29/2008 10:45 AM

In Iran, a society where women are not allowed to go out in public with scarves and body coverings, a Judical official is now saying Barbie Dolls and other Western cultural items are posing a threat. Some of the Barbie Dolls may have bikinis and this is very disturbing to a country where men and women cannot even swim together. In the 90's the Iranian government even went so far into saying that Barbie and other Western culture were a Trojan Horse planted by the West into Iran. In 2002 they even tried confiscating the dolls from store shelves but that was shut down as it did not really stem the tide of dolls into the country. The Iranian officials want to keep Western values and symbols away from their youth to preserve their way of life.
