Today, John McCain detailed what he envisions achieving as President by the end of his first term in 2013.

John McCain will put the national interest ahead of partisanship to build an America that is safer, freer and more prosperous than when he was elected.

When John McCain is President, the era of the permanent campaign will end. He will work with anyone who wants to get this country moving again and will listen to any idea intended to solve our problems, not make them worse.

In forming government policy, John McCain will work with members of Congress from both parties.
John McCain's administration will set new standards for transparency and accountability.

John McCain will not leave our problems for another unluckier generation of Americans to fix after they have become even harder to solve.

John McCain also outlined his views on presidential power. The President's powers are rightly checked by the other branches of government, and John McCain will not attempt to acquire powers granted to Congress. He will exercise his veto but not subvert legislation through statements.

After four years of a McCain administration, America will be more secure and working with its allies and partners around the world to make us safer. In 2013:

The Iraq War has been won, Iraq is a functioning democracy, violence is much reduced, and America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure.

The United States maintains a military presence in Iraq, but a much smaller one that does not play a direct combat role.

The threat from a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan has been greatly reduced.
There is a functioning League of Democracies that has effectively applied pressure on Sudan to agree to a multinational peacekeeping force to stop the genocide.

There is no longer any place in the world al Qaeda can consider a safe haven. An increase in actionable intelligence leads to the capture or death of Osama Bin Laden and his lieutenants.

Through increased international cooperation and concerted use of American power, we have disrupted terrorist networks and exposed plots around the world.

The United States and its allies have made great progress in advancing nuclear security.

The size of the Army and Marine Corps has been significantly increased, and are now better equipped and trained to defend us. A substantial increase in veterans educational benefits and improvements in their health care has aided recruitment and retention.

After four years of a McCain administration, the economy is stronger, Americans once again have confidence in their economic future and businesses are empowered to thrive. In 2013:

The economy is growing and Americans again have confidence in their economic future. Congress has lowered taxes and passed fundamental tax reform offering a choice in how taxes are filed.

The spending binge in Washington has ended. After John McCain exercises his veto pen in his first year in office, Congress has not passed an appropriations bill containing earmarks for the last three years. A top to bottom review of government and reforms yield great reductions in spending.
New trade agreements have been ratified leading to substantial increases in exports.

Americans who have lost jobs in the global economy are assisted by reformed unemployment insurance and worker retraining programs.

Public education is much improved due to measures that lead to increased competition, higher quality teachers, a revolution in teaching methods, higher graduation rates and higher test scores.

Health care is more accessible to more Americans than at any other time in history.

Medicare's solvency has been extended and both parties have worked together to fix Social Security without reducing benefits to those near retirement.

The United States is on its way to independence from foreign sources of oil with a cap-and- trade system spurring innovation, advancement in clean coal technology and the beginning of construction on 20 new nuclear reactors.

After four years of a McCain administration, new judges have been confirmed who understand they are not there to write laws, the border is secure and more Americans are called to serve. In 2013:

Scores of judges have been confirmed to the federal bench who understand they were sent there to enforce our laws and make sure they are consistent with the Constitution.

Border state governors have certified and the American people recognize that after tremendous improvements, our southern border is now secure. Illegal immigration is under control, and the American people accept the practical necessity to institute a temporary worker program and deal humanely with illegal immigrants.

Voluntary national service has grown in popularity.

John McCain Opens Eco Store on his Website
5/13/2008 6:00 PM
In a bizarre twist for a Republican candidate, John McCain has opened a Eco Store on his JohnMcCain.com site. An email was sent throughout the Internet to supporters telling them of the opening of the store.

When you go to the site you can find T-Shirts and Polo Shirts made with recycled materils to buy. You can even find bags and books made with recyled materials. They even have coffee mugs with their Recycle Logo.

This makes sense considering McCain is promoting himself as a new kind of Republican who is kind to the Evironment. He came out with several proposals to combat Global warming in the past couple of days. As his website says "Go Green"

McCain Vice President Sweepstakes
5/12/2008 8:00 PM
While everybody is playing up a potential dream ticket of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton we will look at who is in the running to be the VP candidate for John McCain. This week some reports have put former presidential hopeful Mike Hucakbee as the early clubhouse leader. He brings charisma and southern charm to the ticket as well as social conservatism that some say McCain lacks himself.

Huckabee though will not play very well to fiscal conservatives with the tax hikes he put through while Governor of Arkansas. Another problem is his lack of enforcement of Illegal Aliens in the state of Arkansas. Since McCain is also weak in those areas it will be a tough decison for him to select Huckabee as well as one that can easily backfire on him.
Mitt Romney another of his vanquished Republican challengers for the nomination is also highly regarded as a potential running mate. He brings executive skills as the former Governor of Massachusetts and financial skills from his venture capital days.

However in today's environment of people distrusting Wall Street types and the observation of some that he is elitist does not help McCain, especially if McCain is going to attack Obama as an elitist.

There are some who say that McCain should pick someone who could help carry a swing state. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Rob Portman of Ohio both fit that bill. They are not as well known as the above candidates but that would change if they are the Vice Presidential running mates. Rob Portman odds of getting the nod will go up greatly if Obama does pick Governor Ted Strckland of Ohio as his running mate. As everyone always points out a Republican has never won the Presidency without carrying Ohio. Bobby Jindal has also been mentioned as a potential running mate but his relative lack of experience and the fact that Louisiana will probably go Republican in the fall work against him.

If a woman is chosen to balance out the ticket. Kay Bailey Hutchinson would be the early favorite due to her long standing reputation as a stalwart Republican Senator from Texas. Even though Condolleeza Rice hs been prominently mentioned she does not want the job and picking someone from the Bush Administration would probably be political suicide for McCain. Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska has also been mentioned but would be a longshot due to her relative inexperience as was the case with Bobby Jindal since that will be one of the main issues that McCain will be attacking Obama on in the fall.

McCain to Break from Bush and Republicans on Environment
5/12/2008 1:00 PM
John McCain is looking to paint himself as a "Green Candidate" and in doing so will break from current Republican policies on the environment. John McCain does believe that Kyoto treaty should have been embraced in some ways by the U.S. rather than be shoved to the side as the Bush Adminsitration has done.

Referring to the Kyoto Protocols on greenhouse gas emissions the U.S. never signed, McCain added "I will not accept the same dead-end of failed diplomacy that claimed Kyoto." McCain is trying to appeal to younger voters and to so called "Green Evangelicals" with his approach to the environment.

McCain is looking to run an Indpendent/Republican candidate rather than a Bush Republican. When you look at Bush's approval numbers he really does not have much a choice if he seriously wants to be elected.

John McCain is almost the forgotten candidate at this time. Everyone is talking about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. He trying everything to try to stay relevent with all the media attention that is being showered on his Democratic rivals. He spoke at Wake Forest University in North Carolina yesterday and reiterated his pledge to nominate Judges in the mold of Justices Alito and Roberts who are conservateve Judges.

He painted himself as being the complete opposite of his Democratic rivals who he believes would appoint Judicial activists to the courts.

This is a big issue for Republicans since John McCain was on the Senate Gang of 14 which comprised centrist Senators who voted on Judges. The group was formed after the Senate Majority leader at the time, Bill Frist threatened to take away the right to filibuster Judicial nominations.
